Congratulations on being the “North Shore Says NO,” because each and every one of you is the North Shore Says NO. And you should rightfully be proud.
Our collective presence in holding ourselves, our communities and the nation accountable to the principles of justice, inclusiveness, and equality before the law, represents the highest goals of a democratic America. While we have not always succeeded in attaining these objectives, we have continued to hold these aspirations as our north star – UNTIL this dystopian administration abandoned them.
With an astounding frail Congress, and a frighteningly acquiescent Supreme Court – we find ourselves very suddenly standing on the precipice of an authoritarian regime, hurtling like a freight train toward a neo-fascist political order. But we have one superpower in our favor…and that is you, and others like you all across this great nation. We will not go quietly into that good night – as you so energetically proved this past Friday.
Your collective action on Friday morning and afternoon drew nearly 125 committed volunteers between the two overpasses and this is just the beginning. Your boisterous presence was covered on ABC Eyewitness News in the morning and on NBC Nightly News in the evening as well as The New York Times. We are loud, proud and are not going away until this emergency has passed.
Ready for next steps? OK – We will again demonstrate at the Church St. overpass (over I-94) in Skokie and the Glenview Rd. overpass in Glenview this Friday( 9/12) morning from 7-9 am and Friday afternoon from 3:30-5:30 pm. And we are ADDING one more overpass on Winnetka Ave in Northfield– same times. Please sign up as soon as possible and encourage your friends as well.
In order to keep this work effective and growing – we require Shift Captains for each action who can be responsible for picking up supplies (highway banners, handheld signs for the cross streets, etc.) and returning them to a nearby location. Please email us at northshoresayno@gmail.com if you can be a captain for any one shift and we will connect with you and work out specific logistics for your overpass and shift. We are hoping for between 2 and 4 captains for each shift to keep the load light for any one person.
Finally – PLEASE SHARE PICTURES, comments and ideas for hand held signs at northshoresaysno@gmail.com. We are hoping to host a sign-making party before this coming Friday to kibbitz, snack and have fun making signs. Stay tuned for an update.
And finally – finally – and this is not a pitch – there is NO obligation. The small Start-Up committee has been funding these moderate expenses out of pocket. If you would like to donate a small amount [$10, $20, $50] (and really there is NO obligation) go to our website, northshoresaysno.org. You’ll find a link there.
That’s enough for now – please use the same SignUp link you used last week for Friday 9/12, and beyond. We’ll see you in the streets.
